Calling Occupants
by Jamie Boyle
The IMA Gallery is pleased to present Calling Occupants, an exhibition of new work by artist Jamie Boyle. The exhibit is an exploration of gestures and ideas inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac, who is famously a character in a play by Edmond Rostand and less famously a real person. In the play, Cyrano helps his friend Christian woo Roxanne, a young woman with whom they are both in love. Unfortunately for the two men, Roxanne falls in love with Christian, the inarticulate handsome one. Whenever he attempts to talk to her, he fumbles for words and she becomes disgusted. Luckily, Cyrano has agreed to come to his rescue and tells him what to say to Roxanne as she stands on her balcony. It is this strange and funny exchange where Cyrano communicates his love truthfully through the mouth of another man that Jamie Boyle is interested in.
Drawing on this exchange in Cyrano de Bergerac, the main component of Calling Occupants will be a similar interaction between Boyle and the owner of The IMA Gallery, Dina Sherman. The artist will call Sherman via a cellular phone and interact with viewers through Sherman as a medium of sorts.
