Scot Kaplan
In the video 30 Cakes artist Scot Kaplan has asked thirty women of varying ages and ethnicities to select a cake, and then to present it to him, and hit him with it. The piece, as it is displayed here, is a time lapsed document of the complete event which was exclusive to the 30 women who participated in it. The comedic and aggressive, nurturing and degrading, explosive and exhaustive event explored gender roles and social structures, selfless and selfish giving and taking and the notion of power’s enhancement and diminishment through time.
Scot Kaplan has lived and worked across the United States since receiving his MFA in sculpture at the University of Pennsylvania. The forms that his artworks take range from experiencial installations, to multimedia interactive objects, to performance and video. He has exhibited widely both across the US and internationally most recently with his piece Control Room which debuted in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2006. Mr. Kaplan currently holds an Assistant Professor of Fine Art position at The Ohio State University.
